Your Bio

David H. Lewis and Mary Margaret Lewis are the photographers who make up Hummingbird Enterprises. Both have been photographers for 15 years studying under the prestigious Arizona Highways photographers and other nationally renowned photographers, such as George D. Lepp, photographer of wildflowers in California and longtime writer in Outdoor Photographer magazine. While living for several years in Wickenburg, Arizona, David and Mary Margaret developed their skills as photographers, giving them the opportunity to photograph the desert in all its glory.

David and Mary Margaret immediately became active in the local Wickenburg Camera Club during which they strove to fulfill the club’s purpose:

“Our aims as a cultural group shall be Mastery, Furtherance and Enjoyment of Photography through Cooperation, Effort and Good Fellowship.”

David served as President of the club as well as serving on the board of the Arizona Camera Club Council. During his term he strove to educate the club on photographic techniques for better photography through tutorials, guest speakers and critique sessions. Mary Margaret became the secretary, the newsletter editor and journalist, and the club’s archival historian/custodian, as well as the club’s representative for the Arizona Camera Club Council.

During this time, David and Mary Margaret won several awards and honors in many competitions; they have been published in magazines such as Popular Photography and Petersen Photographic; their photos have been on display at various exhibits, which include the Hubbard Museum of the American West in New Mexico and several state and county fairs in Arizona and California.

David has since won the Grand Prize in the Petersen’s Photographic Magazine monthly photo contest for an image that they noted as comparable to Cecil De Mille's flaming bush in the Ten Commandments. His dramatic image of an old homestead on fire placed in Outdoor Photography's Annual Photo competition in journalism. His wildflower photos have appeared in the prize-winning Self-Realization Fellowship engagement calendar, in which you would also see prominent photographers like Art Wolfe and the late Galen Rowell. Idaho State Parks and Recreation published one of David’s photos on the 2007 cover of their brochure that is distributed statewide.

Though they have done a variety of work including architectural, journalism and weddings, they have focused their expertise to wildlife and nature. Flowers always win out for David’s personal attention!

They currently volunteer for various state parks and government agencies, donating their services as photographers. Utilizing her computer graphic skills, Mary Margaret is able to implement many of their photographs to create many brochures, Junior Ranger programs and PowerPoint presentations.

Their photos are on display at the Nature Conservancy at the Hassayampa River Preserve in Arizona.

David:
Photography for me is both a love and a challenge. It has become my way of life. My quest to photograph nature’s flowers with their color and form while discovering my own personal vision and self-expression is an on-going endeavor. I’ve centered my interest in flower photography and tried to focus on new and different ways to illustrate them.

Mary Margaret:
I’ve always had an artistic eye. Photography for me meant being able to share David’s experiences. David is the one who has the passion to bend the camera to make the image into what he wants it to be. Though I still love photography and continue to share all the photographic excursions, I’ve veered toward creating on my computer. Creating this website is my new challenge… and what a whole new world this is!

Landscapes by David H. Lewis : “Moments in Time”

Being there at that very right moment is an important ingredient for photographing landscapes. When the sun is rising or setting, and when the sky is full of billowy floating clouds, the moments can be fleeting and that perfect scene may disappear swiftly. Photographing the dawn at Monument Valley or the sunlight and shadows on the cliffs near Kodachrome Basin were both captured spontaneously – in that fleeting moment of time. Seconds later both scenes had changed dramatically.

I hope that you find them enjoyable. Please feel free to comment.

Birds : “Birds, Little Embellishments In Nature’s Scenery”

We sometimes take for granted these colorful avian wonders, flickering and floating through the air. They add a magnificent dimension of beauty to the landscape. Seeing them up close, I’m reminded how sensitive they are, yet durable in their environment.

Scenic Eclipses : Nature’s scenic eclipses are pieces of the landscape. They are the main focus for my camera’s eye.

When the larger landscape before me does not come to life, a portion of it or an object in it will show itself. In most cases, it’s the light that dramatizes the scene. Sometimes the design of the object draws my attention.

It is always rewarding for me to find the beauty in nature’s smaller scenes.

Creative Imagery : The images in this gallery were made in the camera with no Photoshop adjustments. Knowing all that my camera can do and utilizing the filters and lenses in my repertoire, allows me to use my imagination to create a unique image.

Creative ideas can be fun to explore. The camera is a great medium to use to artistically accomplish what I want to.

Even still, the composition or subject can be creative enough all by itself, such as the mannequins or window scenes. It’s always fun to find these creative scenes. More times than none, they are right in front of me.

By the Light of the Silvery Moon : When looking at a full moon, I often wonder about its closeness to our earth. It is our nearest solar neighbor. Many of us don’t realize when it appears in the night sky except for a few times each month when it reaches its fullness and brightness.

I was able to take advantage of this time of lunar exposure. By placing the moon in a photograph with a nighttime street scene or the carnival nightlife I gave it a surrealistic presence.
